Pressing the Paddle, Getting Nothing: Fixing a Silent Water Dispenser

Refrigerator water dispenser not working? Start with the filter, supply valve, dispenser lock and a frozen door tube. Find where the water stops.

By Owen Callahan | ProFix Boston3 min read

A fridge water dispenser that stops working usually has a filter problem, a closed or kinked supply line, a dispenser lock turned on, or a frozen tube in the door. Start with whatever changed most recently, which is often the filter.

Safety first: Unplug the fridge before pulling it out, close the supply valve before touching the water line, and get help moving a full-size refrigerator.

Follow the diagnostic path

Step 1: Did it stop right after a filter change?

If yes: The filter may not be fully seated, or it may be the wrong model. Remove it and reinstall until it locks. Then flush the system as the manual directs; sputtering at first is just air.
If no: Go to Step 2.

Step 2: Is a lock icon lit on the dispenser panel?

If yes: Turn off the dispenser lock, usually by pressing and holding the lock button for a few seconds. The lock stops the dispenser but not the ice maker, so it's easy to miss.
If no: Go to Step 3.

Step 3: Is the ice maker still making ice?

If yes: Water is reaching the fridge, so the trouble is between the valve and the door. Go to Step 5.
If no: Supply is the likely issue. Go to Step 4.

Step 4: Is the supply valve open, with no kinks in the line behind the fridge?

If yes: With good supply and no ice or water, the fridge's inlet valve may have failed. A technician can test it.
If no: Open the valve and straighten the line. Lines often get crushed when a fridge is pushed back after cleaning.

If yes: On many designs, the water tube runs through or near the freezer, and a very cold setting can freeze it. Set the freezer back to 0°F, the commonly recommended setting, and see if the water returns over the next day.
If no: A frozen tube can still happen, or the dispenser switch or valve may have failed. A technician can thaw and test it.

If the water runs but only in a trickle, the filter is often clogged. Homes on private wells clog filters faster; see our guide to well water appliance problems.

Stop and call a technician if

  • •You see water leaking behind or under the fridge.
  • •The dispenser hums or clicks without water flowing.
  • •The line refreezes after you adjust the freezer setting.

Keep it from coming back

  • •Change the filter on schedule and push it in until it locks.
  • •Leave room behind the fridge for the water line.
  • •Keep the freezer at the setting your manual recommends.
Owen's shop tip: Ask yourself whether the ice maker still works before you change anything. Ice but no water means the supply is fine and the problem lives in the door; no ice and no water sends you behind the fridge.
