Dark Inside the Fridge? Tracing a Light That Won't Come On

Refrigerator light not working but the fridge is still cold? Check the bulb or LED, the door switch and Sabbath mode first. Here's how to narrow it down.

If the refrigerator light won't come on, the cause is usually a burned-out bulb, a stuck door switch, a setting such as Sabbath mode, or a failed LED module or control. Check first whether the fridge is still cooling, because that changes how urgent the problem is.

Safety first: Unplug the fridge before changing a bulb, let an incandescent bulb cool before touching it, and don't pry off an LED cover your manual doesn't say is removable.

Follow the diagnostic path

Step 1: Is the fridge still cold and running?

If yes: It's a light-only problem. Go to Step 2.
If no: Dark lights plus a warm fridge points to lost power or a control failure. Check the breaker and outlet. If power is there and nothing runs, call a technician soon to protect your food.

Step 2: Does your fridge use a replaceable bulb?

If yes: Replace it with the bulb type listed in your manual. If a new bulb doesn't light, go to Step 3.
If no: It uses LEDs. Go to Step 3.

Step 3: When you press the door switch by hand, does anything change?

If yes: The switch works. Go to Step 4.
If no: The switch may be stuck or failed. Some fridges use a magnetic sensor instead of a button, so you won't always see one. A light that stays on with the door closed also points to the switch, and it can warm the inside.

Step 4: Is Sabbath mode, or another special mode, turned on?

If yes: On models that have it, Sabbath mode typically keeps interior lights off when the door opens. Turn it off using your manual's steps.
If no: Go to Step 5.

Step 5: Are some lights working and others not?

If yes: One LED module has likely failed. On many models it's a replaceable part, though some need a technician.
If no: If all LEDs are out with the switch working, the LED driver or control board is more likely. A technician can test it.

Some fridges also switch the lights off on their own if a door is left open for a long stretch. Close the door for a minute and try again before you replace anything.

Stop and call a technician if

  • •The fridge isn't cooling.
  • •The light stays on with the door shut and the inside feels warm.
  • •You see scorching around a light housing.

Keep it from coming back

  • •Close doors fully; a door left ajar works the light and switch.
  • •Keep items from pressing on the door switch.
  • •If other door features act up too, such as the water dispenser, mention it when you book.
Owen's shop tip: I've lost count of the "broken" fridge lights that turned out to be Sabbath mode switched on by accident.
